What is Okuizome?

Okuizome is a traditional Japanese ceremony in which a baby pretends to eat food around 100 days after birth, with the hope that the baby will never be short of food for the rest of its life.
It is said to have originated from the "Hajime" custom of chopsticks, which has continued since the Heian period, and is still celebrated today as the "Momoka no Iwai" (100th day celebration).

First meal for children

We will provide a celebratory meal consisting of one soup and three side dishes, including a whole sea bream with head and tail, red rice, clear soup, simmered dishes, and pickles, as well as a teething stone.

Flow of the first meal ceremony

During the first meal ceremony, the family's prayers are expressed by having the child pretend to eat a meal.

The ceremony generally follows the following order. Please rest assured that our staff will explain the process on the day.
1. Rice (brought to your mouth with chopsticks)
2. Clear Soup
3. Rice
4. Fish
5. Rice

After repeating this process three times, the ceremony moves on to the "tooth-hardening ceremony."
By lightly touching the celebratory chopsticks to the teething stone and then gently placing the chopsticks on your child's gums, you are making a wish for strong teeth to grow.

*The person who feeds the food is an older person of the same gender as the child, and is meant to share in the child's longevity as the person who holds the chopsticks (foster parent).

Regarding Reservations

When you make a reservation, we will ask you about the gender of your child. (The standard bowls for boys are vermilion lacquered, and for girls they are black lacquered on the outside and vermilion lacquered on the inside.)
