<Mie traditional craft experience>
The wood is polished and small lotus root netsuke is made.

Netsuke are small carvings of about 3 to 4 cm that have been around since the Edo period, and are used as obi fasteners. Ise netsuke are characterized by the use of boxwood, and are certified as a traditional craft designated by Mie Prefecture. We will be making small netsuke out of lotus root, which is considered to be an auspicious item that can "see into the future."

Instructor Introduction A group of young craftsmen who are active in traditional crafts, mainly in Mie Prefecture. The group was established in 2012 with the aim of not only exchanging their skills and sharing concerns with their peers, but also to promote exchanges and to help many people learn about traditional crafts. By conveying to many people that traditional crafts and craftsmen are wonderful, we hope that as many people as possible will take on traditional crafts that are being lost. Our activities are based on the idea that by letting people know the appeal of traditional crafts, more people will use them.
  • Depending on the wood selected, a blade may be used, and children will only be able to use sandpaper. Elementary school students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • When sanding wood, your hands and clothes may get dirty with wood dust.
  • Duration: Approximately 60 to 90 minutes. You can join in at any time.
