AOI-DEN, Japanese Garden

AOI-DEN, Japanese Garden is a strolling garden facing the AOI-DEN and MINORI -no-Ma Hall. It is a majestic strolling garden that spreads out on the southern slope of AOI-DEN and is composed of a three-tiered waterfall. It was registered as a Kyoto City Cultural Property (Scenic Spot) in 1994. This garden was created in 1933 by Ogawa Jihei VII (known as Ueji, 1860-1933), a famous Kyoto gardener who was a pioneer of modern Japanese gardens. Its distinctive features include the technique of crossing ponds and streams by "jumping through streams," and the arrangement of Moriyama stones with clear stripes that were brought from the west shore of Lake Biwa by canal boat. In particular, the three-tiered waterfall called "Kumoi no Taki" (Cloud Waterfall), designed to take advantage of the natural topography of the steep slope, is said to be one of Ogawa Jihei's masterpieces. It was restored and maintained when AOI-DEN was renovated (completed in October 1992), and is a symbol of our hotel's long history and rich cultural and natural environment.

Pendant lamp

The MINORI, designed by architect Togo Murano, was originally decorated with a painting of "Abundance" by painter Seika Yamaga on the wall and had a pendant light designed by Murano hanging from the ceiling, creating a luxurious atmosphere. When the room was renovated in 1992, the pendant light was left in place, but a woven cloth design that continued the idea of "abundance" was used on the wall. The room was reopened in 2014, and the MINORI was restored to its original appearance from the 1992 renovation, inheriting the spirit of the past.
