AOI-DEN, Japanese Garden

A strolling garden designed by Kyoto gardener Jihei Ogawa VII

[Registered as a Kyoto City Cultural Property (Scenic Spot) on April 1, 1994] AOI-DEN, Japanese Garden is a majestic strolling garden that spreads out on the southern slope of AOI-DEN and is composed of a three-tiered waterfall. This garden was created in 1933 by Ogawa Jihei VII (1868-1933), a Kyoto gardener famous as a pioneer of modern Japanese gardens. Its distinctive features include the technique of "jumping across streams" across ponds and streams, and the arrangement of Moriyama stones with clear stripes that were brought in by canal boats from the west shore of Lake Biwa. In particular, the three-tiered waterfall called "Kumoi no Taki" (Unoi Falls), designed to take advantage of the natural topography of the steep slope, is said to be one of Ogawa Jihei's masterpieces. It was restored when AOI-DEN was renovated (completed in October 1992), and is a symbol of our hotel's long history and rich cultural and natural environment.
