"140th Anniversary of Birth: Seika Yamaga Exhibition" Collaboration

Known as a pioneer of textile art, Seika Yamaga (1885-1981) established her own unique technique, "Teori Nishiki," in which she handled everything from designing the patterns and selecting the threads to weaving, creating numerous works that traversed tradition and modernism. This exhibition is the first retrospective in 40 years to look back on Yamaga's artistic career. The "MINORI" banquet hall in our hotel is a special place that tells the story of the deep connection between Seika Yamaga and our hotel. For this occasion, we have prepared special menus inspired by Seika Yamaga's work "Fruitful Harvest" and by her unique and original inspiration. Please take this opportunity to enjoy them in conjunction with the exhibition.

The painting of "Abundance" covering an entire wall is the origin of the name "MINORI."

Our hotel's banquet hall, "MINORI," was designed by architect Togo Murano and was created in 1939 during the time of the Miyako Hotel. It once adorned a large mural, "Fruitful Harvest," created by Seika Yamaga in collaboration with Murano. This vibrant depiction of a bountiful harvest gave the hall its name. While the mural was removed during renovations in 1992 and is no longer present in the banquet hall, a portion of it is housed in the Kyoto City Museum of Art (managed by the Kyoto Museum of Culture) and can be seen at this exhibition. Seika Yamaga is an artist with deep ties to our hotel, having not only created the large mural for "MINORI," but also designed the Royal Suite and donated works featuring express trains to the hotel. This collaboration provides a valuable opportunity for many people to learn about these little-known historical connections.

Chef Sako, who carries on the legacy of Dominique Bouchet, will be offering a special course menu called "Generation," which will be combined with two appetizers and desserts inspired by Seika Yamaga's "Abundance" and Yamaga's style of expression.

"Yamaga Seika Exhibition" Collaboration Menu

A Symphony of Vegetables

Inspired by the vegetable motifs depicted in Seika Yamaga's artwork, this dish features seasonal vegetables as the main ingredients. A dynamically drawn, single-stroke beet sauce serves as the base for a woven fabric, with three vibrant vegetable purees layered as the weft. Nuts and truffles are added as accents to express the geometric yet warm "three-dimensional feel of handwoven" that is characteristic of Yamaga's work. The main seasonal vegetables are carefully braised, resulting in a dish that allows you to savor the rich flavors inherent in the ingredients, along with the artistic beauty of its composition.

"Yamaga Seika Exhibition" Collaboration Sweets

Special collaboration dessert

This special collaboration dessert expresses the rich fruits depicted in Seika Yamaga's works and the elegant world of her weaving. The line drawn in the center of the plate is a chocolate representation of "thread," the core of her works. Almonds, pistachios, white chocolate, and dried cranberries are arranged on top to express the three-dimensionality and sophisticated modern design unique to textiles. The brightly colored and elaborately designed mousse is a three-dimensional imitation of motifs that appear in her works. The eye-catching bright yellow lemon mousse is a two-layered creation in which the refreshing acidity harmonizes with the rich flavor of fragrant Earl Grey tea. The delicate apple mousse has a smooth and clear taste. The accompanying lemon and verbena sorbet enhances the refreshing aftertaste.

The free and modern world of imagination that pioneer of dyeing and weaving art, Seika Yamaga, is proud of has been transformed into a single dessert. Inspired by the exhibition's main visual, "Constellations, Moon, and Rocket," this sophisticated cake depicts a rocket taking off into space. A rich pistachio sponge cake and apricot ganache are layered with sweet and sour fruit, and the cake is finished in vibrant mint blue and pink hues, which are unusual for a classic opera cake. Served with fragrant chocolate ice cream and elegantly aromatic tonka bean milk foam, you can enjoy a three-dimensional harmony of sweetness and tartness, along with the exhilarating feeling of appreciating a work of art.
